The initial design stage can be fast and impulsive, with many ideas flowing and explored until the right form is discovered. This is captured in the form of expressive drawings and paintings within a sketch book and driven by conversations with clients and mentors.
In the refinement stage the tempo slows down and becomes more methodical, this pace helps to work through the final detailed scale drawings in pencil and ink, using watercolour to explore tones to help decide which materials would co-exist well together. Colum likes to use native sustainable hardwoods.

After the scale drawings are complete Colum moves onto create a ‘Rod’ (a full scale 2D drawing on board), this is used as a companion during the making process, providing a reference point from which all dimensions are taken.
The making process is meticulously planned and a process list is created, material is ordered and a project timescale created to allow enough time for shipping and for the wood to acclimatise to the local environment. Final dimensions are confirmed, the material is cut, then joints and joinery are prepared.

Elements such as drawers and doors are shaped, finished and fitted. The piece is then clamped and glued, the final stage is applying the finish. Colum uses high quality oils to create a smooth, silky finish to his pieces, these are environmentally safe and have a pleasant aroma.
To add to the personal touch Colum then arranges delivery and installation to his client’s home or commercial premises.
